What is the Temple of Literature?
The Temple of Literature was founded in 1070 by King Ly Thanh Tong to honour Confucius, and in 1076 it became home to Quoc Tu Giam, Vietnam’s first national university. In 2026 it marks 950 years of that university.
Anyone can walk in; what is hard to see alone is what it meant. On our tours tickets and calligraphy are included.
Five courtyards, one idea
Each gate takes you a step further from the street and closer to learning, past the Constellation of Literature pavilion and the square Well of Heavenly Clarity, to the halls of the old university.
The 82 doctors’ steles
Stone tablets on the backs of tortoises record the laureates of the royal exams from 1442 to 1779. Your guide reads names and stories from them, not just dates.
Your first characters
A scholar-calligrapher shows you how the brush moves, then helps you write a word of your choosing to take home on red paper.

The Temple of Literature is a short ride from the Old Quarter and the ticket costs a few dollars. If you want an hour among handsome buildings and a few photographs, you can have that on your own.

Questions people ask before booking
Is the Temple of Literature worth a guided tour?
For many visitors, an hour alone is enough to enjoy the architecture. A guide is worth it if you want to understand what you are looking at — the royal exams, the symbols in each courtyard, the names on the steles — and to fit it into a day that makes sense of Hanoi.
What should I wear?
Cover shoulders and knees at the Temple of Literature and at pagodas, and especially at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on the full day, where guards turn away shorts and sleeveless tops. Comfortable shoes; there is a fair amount of walking on stone.
What is included in the price?
Your own car and driver, a licensed local guide who speaks fluent English, pickup and drop-off at your hotel or anywhere you ask in Hanoi, every entrance fee, the calligraphy session and bottled water — plus lunch and the water puppet show on the full day. Not included: personal shopping, drinks beyond the water we bring, and a tip for your guide and driver.
What happens if we cancel?
Cancelling at least 3 days (72 hours) before the tour is free: the whole payment is returned, and changing the date costs nothing if there is space. Within 3 days, no-shows included, we keep 30% of the tour price, because the guide, the car and your places are already reserved for you.
Can the day be adjusted for children or a slower pace?
Yes. Both itineraries are samples: drop a stop, add one, stay longer at the steles or shorten the walking for small children or older parents. Children under 5 travel free and do not count towards the group size; from 5 a child counts as one guest.
How do we pay for the tour?
You can pay the full amount online by card or PayPal when you book, or pay a 30% deposit online and give the remaining 70% to your guide in cash on the day, in US dollars or Vietnamese dong. With the cash option we send the deposit invoice by WhatsApp or email, and your place is confirmed once it is paid.
How far in advance should we book?
Two or three days is usually enough. Allow a week from October to April and around Vietnamese holidays. If you want the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum on the full day, tell us your dates: it opens only in the morning, closes on Mondays and Fridays, and shuts for maintenance for several weeks each year.
